About the Northern Middlesex YMCA

A Community Where Everyone Belongs

For more than 135 years, the Northern Middlesex YMCA has been bringing people together and responding to the changing needs of our community.

We are more than a gym. We are a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. From a child learning to swim and a teen discovering their potential to an adult rebuilding strength after cancer or a man finding safe, stable housing, the Y meets people where they are and helps them take their next step forward.

Every day, people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities come to the Northern Middlesex YMCA to learn, grow, connect and thrive.

Our Areas of Impact
Youth Development

We believe every child and teen deserves the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Through preschool, before- and after-school care, summer camp, swim lessons, youth sports, teen programs and leadership opportunities, the Y helps young people build confidence, develop meaningful relationships and feel a true sense of belonging.

Healthy Living

The Y supports the health of the whole person—spirit, mind and body. Our fitness, aquatics and wellness programs help people of all ages and abilities become stronger, improve their well-being and connect with a supportive community. Specialized programs, including LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, provide encouragement and guidance for individuals navigating life-changing health challenges.

Social Responsibility

We believe strong communities are built when neighbors care for and support one another. The Northern Middlesex YMCA works alongside local organizations, businesses, volunteers and community leaders to expand access, address community needs and create opportunities for all.

Our work also includes the historic Schwarz Residence for Men, which provides safe, stable and affordable housing while helping residents maintain their dignity, independence and connection to the community.

Our Community of Caring

The Northern Middlesex YMCA serves children, teens, adults, seniors and families throughout Middletown and the surrounding communities. Our reach extends from our historic facility on Union Street to the Phelps Ingersoll Preschool and YMCA Camp Ingersoll—a 77-acre outdoor center in Portland where children and families connect with nature, build friendships and create lasting memories.

Financial assistance helps ensure that YMCA membership, programs and services remain accessible to individuals and families who may otherwise be unable to participate. Because at the Y, everyone deserves the opportunity to belong.

Welcoming All

The Y is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life, working side by side to strengthen our community. We are committed to creating an environment where every person is welcomed, respected and given the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.

Our core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.....guide everything we do.

Building the Y of the Future

As our community grows and changes, the Northern Middlesex YMCA is preparing to serve future generations through the

All Together Better Capital Campaign.

The planned transformation of our historic Middletown facility will improve accessibility, expand spaces for children and teens, enhance health and wellness programming and modernize the Schwarz Residence for Men.

This once-in-a-generation investment will ensure that the quality of our facility reflects the quality and impact of the programs, services and relationships created inside it.
