“He’s come in several times,” said John Geary, Drummond’s history teacher and basketball coach in middle school who is entering his 46th year of teaching and coaching. “He’s visited elementary schools, too. He’s brought winter clothing. Most of the time, he does it anonymously, but everyone knows who it came from. He’s tried that a couple times, ‘From an anonymous person.’ Nice try. YMCA Andre Allstars member, Keran was thrilled to meet Andre in person. Keran recently received an award in memory of Jose Trinidad who tragically passed away at a WWMS basketball event in 2016. Jose had also been a big fan of Andre and requested to wear jersey number #44 which is the same # worn by

Of course, Drummond was the center of attention at the event, sitting behind a table, posing for hundreds of pictures. His mother, Christine Cameron, helps run his charitable pursuits and was on hand to help organize. His grandparents and several aunts and uncles and cousins — all of them currently or previously Middletown-based — were with him, too.

“I spent more hours here than you could imagine,” Drummond said. “My heart and soul is in this gym. To come back here, I take pride in it. Like I said, this feels like home to me.” Michele Rulnick, CEO/President of the Y has a strong connection with Andre that goes back to his childhood years here at the Y when she was the Director of Youth Programs.

Andre with his mom, Christine and grandmother, Iris. “This is where I wanted to send him in the summertime, during offseason,” said Cameron, who lives in Orlando. “He would come to swim lessons and come to camps. This is where he played basketball. This is where it started. … Time really flies. I’m really happy that he’s the awesome young man that I know he is.”
