American Red Cross Courses at the Middlesex Y
Learn to save a life! 

The Middlesex YMCA Aquatics Department has several certified American Red Cross Instructors and we routinely offer courses for staff, members, and non-members from the community. Certain topics have several different levels of certification, so be sure to chose the correct one. All courses follow American Red Cross standards.

**All classes require a minimum of 3 participants to run as scheduled.**

Red Cross Certification Courses

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

Provides entry-level participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. All participants must pass the pre-test to participate in the course. 

Prerequisites:
  • Blended learning lifeguard classes - 9.5 online classroom work and 19.5 hours in person training. Online work must be completed prior to in person training.

  • Minimum age 15 years old

  • Swim 300 yards (12 laps) continuously on front

  • Tread water for two minutes using legs only

  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface and swim 20 yards on back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or ladder.

  • Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for two years.

LIFEGUARD RE-CERTIFICATION COURSE

This abbreviated lifeguarding course briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for two years. 

  • Fee: $175

WATERFRONT TRAINING (MUST HAVE VALID LG CERT)

Waterfront Lifeguard Prerequisites

Be at least 15 years old
Complete the required online course before the first class
Pass the following swim test on the first day of class
500-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
2-minute tread using legs only
Retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool within 100 seconds
Swim 5 yds, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yds apart, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yds to complete the skill sequence

Please note: If any class or program is canceled by the YMCA, a full refund of paid program fees, will be made from the YMCA. Other membership, program, joiner’s and drafting fee are nonrefundable.
